Product Details

The WaveSail™ stands alone on the international stage, as the largest and easiest to install retractable shade sail system in the world. Our customer's are provided with a custom made sail, boxed and ready for simple installation according to our installation videos. No other product offers such simplicity, whilst offering such a large shade footprint; with widths of up to six meters (6.05m) and length of over 13 (13.1m). The WaveSail can cover areas of almost 80m². Note that the average residential pool is 9m x 4.5m, 40.5m².

Made from the highest quality components, our shade sails operate via an endless chord system that moves the lead pole back and forth. The sail is suspended on ball bearing pulleys that glide along two parallel cables that are under considerable (though controlled) tension. The endless looping cord is tied off via a horn cleat.

Covered by our 5-7 year warranty on all parts and accessories, the WaveSail™ retractable shade sail exceeds Australian Standards (AS) 1170 and (AS) 1530, allowing years of heavy use in our harsh Australian conditions.

Customer's can choose between a fixed or floating sail, explained in the How It All Works video on the homepage. Fixed sails are attached at the stacking end to the supporting structures, therefore always providing shade from that point forward. Floating sails are not attached to the structures and the entire sail can be moved to any position on the cables, suiting installations where the stacking structures are set back from the intended area to be shaded.

Components

Pulleys

Clamps and pulleys

The WaveSail™ fabric and the poles that are inserted within the fabric are suspended from the two parallel cables via clamps and pulleys. The ball bearing pulleys are made from 316 stainless steel and stabilised nylon, while the clamps are a powder coated aluminium alloy to deliver strength while keeping the shade sail light. Both components have been rigorously tested.

Fabric Lighter

PVC-polyester fabric

Our fabric is a higher density, durability and overall quality than the cheaper and more widely used HDPE ‘shade cloth’. Commercial grade PVC coated polyester fibres are woven into a tight mesh to achieve 95% UV blockout. It is a mould and mildew resistant shade sail fabric that can easily withstand our punishing Australian weather.

Stainless

Metal parts

Given that most components are custom made, we choose the highest quality metal alloys, powder coat paints and surface treatments to optimise corrosion resistance over many years. The WaveSail is used around salt water pools and often installed right on the coast, so all metal parts are tried and tested in the most punishing environments that Australian has to offer.

Specifications

Structures

Each WaveSail receives tailored structural engineering plans free of charge. The detailed plans tell the builder what to do. We'll recommend builders after the Discovery Call. Our engineers always prefer new structures, fit for purpose. Specifications vary depending on you sail size, soil type and structure type.

Dimensions

A single shade sail can span up to 13.1m in length and up to 6.05m wide. Most customer's preferred pool shade option involved their WaveSail™ being big enough to cover their pool and coping tile. The default fabric drop (cable to lowest part of fabric when stacked) is 500-550mm. Cables are not recommended to span more than 14.5m, due to excessive tension forces.

Warranty and guarantee

ShadeSpot™ guarantees all components are fit for purpose via the standard five year warranty period, with the option to extend this to seven years. This is in addition to our 'love it or money back' guarantee, which refers to the option of a full refund within 30 days.

Method of operation

Due to the simplicity of the method of operation, most customers are happy to save money and operate their WaveSail™ by hand. Though, we are developing a motorised system that will suit sails of up to 8m in length - if interested, please discuss this during your Discovery Call

Fundamental mechanics

The sails glides along two parallel stainless steel 'guide cables', typically set at 60% of the sail's width apart i.e. 3m apart in a 5m wide sail. The sail has aluminium poles inserted into sleeves every meter or so. The poles move along the guide cables via ball bearing pulleys, operated by an endless looping cord that is tied to the lead pole. If pulled in one direction the sail extends, the other, and it retracts.

Wind and force

The WaveSail™ retractable shade sail can withstand winds of over 60kph, however the supporting structures are designed to suit winds of up to 48kph (very strong winds). So retract the shade sail in severe winds or when not in use to ensure that structures are not damaged.
